Purpose of the Study:
To compare the effects of static stretching and pre-event massage on kicking speed performance in Taekwondo athletes, and identify the most effective preparation method for enhancing explosive lower limb actions.
Key Findings:
- Pre-event massage significantly improved kicking speed (p = 0.001), while static stretching and control groups showed no significant changes.
- Pre-event massage techniques (effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement) enhanced blood flow, reduced muscle fatigue, and improved readiness.
- Static stretching may reduce muscle excitability and is better suited for post-training recovery rather than pre-competition preparation.
Practical Implications for Silat:
Although the study was conducted on Taekwondo athletes, the findings are highly relevant to Silat Olahraga, which also relies heavily on explosive lower limb techniques such as kicks, sweeps, and evasive movements.
- Pre-event massage should be integrated into Silat warm-up routines to enhance kicking speed and overall performance.
- Static stretching should be avoided before matches, as it may reduce muscle responsiveness. Instead, use it during cool-down sessions to improve flexibility and recovery.
- Quick recovery between bouts is essential in Silat tournaments. Massage can help reduce fatigue and anxiety, allowing athletes to maintain peak performance across multiple rounds.
Tips for Application:
Athletes:
- Request a pre-event massage before matches to improve kicking speed and reduce muscle tightness.
- Avoid static stretching immediately before competition; opt for dynamic warm-ups instead.
Parents:
- Support athletes in accessing proper recovery and preparation methods, including massage therapy.
- Encourage awareness of physical readiness and mental relaxation before competition.
Coaches:
- Train support staff or assistant coaches in basic pre-event massage techniques.
- Schedule massage sessions before matches and between bouts to optimize athlete performance.
- Replace static stretching with dynamic mobility drills in pre-match routines.
