Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between leadership coaching styles and athlete satisfaction among university-level Silat Olahraga athletes, and to identify gender-based preferences in coaching behavior.

Key Findings:

  • Positive Correlation:
    • Training & Instruction (r = 0.478, p < .001)
    • Democratic Behavior (r = 0.472, p < .001)
    • Social Behavior (r = 0.207, p < .05)
  • Gender Differences:
    • Female athletes preferred training & instruction and democratic coaching styles more than male athletes.
    • No significant gender differences in athlete satisfaction levels.
  • Athlete Preferences:
    • Athletes preferred coaches who:
      • Explain techniques clearly.
      • Provide individualized feedback.
      • Set performance targets.
      • Coordinate team efforts.
      • Respect athlete roles and strengths.

Practical Implications:

  • For Competitions:
    • Coaches should adopt training-focused and democratic styles to enhance athlete satisfaction and performance.
    • Satisfaction is linked to better performance outcomes in Silat Olahraga.
  • For Organizations (if not used for competition):
    • Use findings to train coaches in effective leadership styles.
    • Develop coach evaluation tools based on athlete feedback.
    • Promote gender-sensitive coaching approaches without bias.

Tips for Application:

Athletes:

  • Communicate your preferred coaching style to your coach.
  • Seek feedback and clarity during training to improve performance.

Parents:

  • Encourage coaches who are supportive, instructional, and democratic.
  • Monitor your child’s satisfaction and motivation in training environments.

Coaches:

  • Focus on instructional clarity, individualized guidance, and team coordination.
  • Avoid overly autocratic styles; instead, foster collaboration and athlete input.
  • Regularly assess athlete satisfaction to adjust coaching strategies.
