Silat MADANI has officially taken its place on the global stage, winning the Gold Medal at the International Malay World Innovation Competition (iMAN25). This prestigious recognition marks a significant milestone in the journey of Silat Melayu from a traditional martial art to a modern, academically grounded discipline with international relevance.
Led by Dr. Mohamad Nizam Mohamed Shapie, Silat MADANI is more than a martial arts program—it is a visionary framework that integrates cultural heritage, sports science, and educational innovation. Developed by a dedicated team of researchers from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), the initiative reflects Malaysia’s commitment to nurturing holistic youth development through heritage-based education.
The concept of MADANI, which emphasizes a civilized, ethical, and inclusive society, is embedded in every aspect of the Silat MADANI model. It promotes the development of “Atlet Madani”—youth who are not only physically skilled but also emotionally intelligent, culturally grounded, and socially responsible.
At iMAN25, Silat MADANI stood out for its academic depth and practical impact. The judges praised its ability to preserve the philosophical essence of Silat while adapting it to modern educational and sporting contexts. The program includes modules on Silat philosophy, movement science, emotional resilience, and leadership—making it a comprehensive tool for character building.
The Gold Medal is a testament to the years of research and advocacy led by Dr. Nizam, who has been instrumental in academicising Silat Melayu since 2013. With over 47 publications and international collaborations, his work has positioned Silat not just as a martial art, but as a scholarly discipline.
The award ceremony at iMAN25 was attended by cultural leaders, educators, and policymakers. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Nizam emphasized that Silat MADANI is a product of both tradition and transformation. “We are not only preserving our heritage—we are projecting it forward, into classrooms, communities, and global arenas,” he said.
Silat MADANI is also supported by the Monograf IMAN25, published by Penerbit UiTM, which documents the academic journey and innovation behind the project. This publication serves as a reference for future researchers, educators, and cultural advocates seeking to integrate heritage into modern frameworks.
Looking ahead, Silat MADANI will be expanded through digital platforms, teacher training programs, and international workshops. It will continue to serve as a model for how martial arts can contribute to education, peacebuilding, and cultural pride.
With this Gold Medal, Silat MADANI has proven that Malay martial arts can evolve without losing their soul—and that innovation rooted in heritage can inspire the world.
