PASSMAL Reinforces Its Role as Guardian of Authentic Malay Silat

SHAH ALAM, 15 February 2025 – The Malaysian Organization of Authentic Malay Silat Arts (PASSMAL) reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the purity and heritage of Silat Melayu, positioning itself as the national guardian of traditional Malay martial arts.

In a statement released by Dr. Mohamad Nizam Shapie, General Manager of PASSMAL and President of the World Silat Federation (WSF), the organisation outlined five core reasons why PASSMAL remains the most trusted authority in authentic Silat preservation and development.

1. Rooted in Tradition, Free from Foreign Influence

PASSMAL ensures that Silat Malaysia remains untainted by external martial arts systems, maintaining its identity as a pure Malay combat art.

2. Structured Curriculum Based on Original Silat Melayu

The Silat Malaysia Curriculum 2050, developed by Dr. Nizam, is based on traditional teachings and adapted for modern education, ensuring consistency and integrity.

3. Community-Based Training and Cultural Integration

PASSMAL continues to operate in rural and urban communities, integrating Silat into cultural festivals, schools, and youth programmes.

4. Academicisation of Silat for Future Generations

Through partnerships with UiTM and international bodies, PASSMAL has elevated Silat into academic research, producing over 47 publications and postgraduate theses.

5. Global Recognition Through WSF and UNESCO ICM

PASSMAL’s collaboration with WSF and UNESCO ICM has positioned Silat Malaysia as a globally respected martial art, with growing interest from Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

“PASSMAL is not just preserving Silat—it is protecting the soul of Malay identity,” said Dr. Nizam during a cultural symposium in Shah Alam.

As Silat Malaysia continues to evolve, PASSMAL remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the values, philosophy, and legacy of Silat Melayu.
