PASSMAL Celebrates International Triumph at ACPES 2025

Iligan City, Philippines – October 2025 – Malaysia’s Silat leadership took center stage at the Asia Conference on Physical Education and Sports (ACPES) 2025, where PASSMAL earned international acclaim for its contributions to martial arts research and cultural promotion.

Representing Malaysia, PASSMAL’s delegation, led by Dr. Mohamad Nizam Mohamed Shapie, delivered two award-winning presentations that highlighted a decade of sports science research and the global academicisation of Silat. The presentations earned the Best Oral Presentation Award, marking a proud moment for Malaysia’s martial arts community.

The first presentation focused on coaching science and athlete development in Silat from 2013 to 2024, showcasing UiTM’s research efforts under PASSMAL’s guidance. The second explored the global recognition of Silat scholarship, emphasizing Malaysia’s leadership in integrating martial arts into academic platforms.

“Silat is no longer confined to the arena—it is now part of global academic discourse,” said Dr. Nizam during the award ceremony. “This recognition reflects our commitment to excellence in both practice and research.”

PASSMAL also captivated audiences during the ACPES Gala Dinner with a live Silat showcase, blending traditional movements with modern choreography. The performance received standing ovations and sparked interest from international universities, including an invitation to conduct Silat training in Mindanao next year.

Delegates from various countries praised PASSMAL’s efforts in promoting Silat as a tool for cultural diplomacy and youth development. The organization’s work with UNESCO ICM and IMACSSS was highlighted as a model for preserving intangible heritage through structured education and international collaboration.

ACPES 2025 served as a strategic platform for PASSMAL to expand its global network. Discussions were held with sports science faculties and martial arts federations from Southeast Asia and Europe, with plans for joint research and exchange programs already underway.

The success at ACPES reinforces PASSMAL’s role as a global leader in Silat development. With its blend of tradition, innovation, and academic rigor, the organization continues to elevate Malaysia’s status in the international martial arts community.

As PASSMAL returns home, the momentum from ACPES 2025 is expected to fuel upcoming initiatives, including the rollout of Silat EVO tournaments and the expansion of Silat Malaysia Curriculum across ASEAN institutions.
