A Night of Honour: Silat Melayu Shines at ACPES 2025 Gala Dinner

The ACPES 2025 Gala Dinner in Iligan City, Philippines, was more than a celebration of academic excellence—it was a cultural showcase that placed Silat Melayu at the heart of international admiration. Among the evening’s most memorable moments was the powerful performance of Silat by Malaysian delegates, led by Dr. Mohamad Nizam Mohamed Shapie, which earned a resounding thumbs-up from the Chancellor of the host university.

Held in a grand ballroom filled with scholars, athletes, and dignitaries from across Asia and beyond, the gala dinner served as the closing highlight of the Asia Conference on Physical Education and Sports Science (ACPES). As the lights dimmed and traditional Malay music filled the air, the audience was treated to a captivating Silat demonstration that blended artistry, discipline, and combat precision.

The performance was not merely a display of martial prowess—it was a cultural narrative. Each movement told a story of heritage, resilience, and the warrior spirit of the Malay world. The choreography, rooted in traditional Silat Tempur and Silat Tari, showcased the depth of Malaysia’s martial arts legacy. The audience watched in awe as practitioners executed fluid strikes, graceful stances, and symbolic gestures that reflected centuries of tradition.

The Chancellor, visibly impressed, stood and gave a heartfelt thumbs-up as the performance concluded. His gesture was more than symbolic—it was a recognition of Silat Melayu as a legitimate and respected martial art on the global stage. In his brief remarks afterward, he praised the performers for their discipline and cultural pride, noting that such showcases enrich the academic and cultural dimensions of international conferences.

Dr. Nizam, who also received the Best Paper Oral Presentation Award earlier in the conference, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to present Silat not only as a research subject but as a living tradition. “Silat is more than a martial art—it is a philosophy, a way of life, and a bridge between cultures,” he said during his toast.

The gala dinner also served as a platform for future collaborations. Delegates from the Faculty of Sports Science in Mindanao expressed interest in inviting Dr. Nizam and his team to conduct Silat training workshops in 2026, further expanding the reach of Silat Melayu across Southeast Asia.

As the evening drew to a close, the Silat performance remained the talk of the night. It was a proud moment for Malaysia, a testament to the power of cultural diplomacy, and a reminder that martial arts can be a profound medium for education, unity, and international recognition.
