7 Milestones in Dr. Nizam’s 30-Year Journey Modernising Silat Malaysia

SHAH ALAM, 1 January 2025 – As Silat Malaysia enters a new year of growth and global recognition, PASSMAL and the World Silat Federation (WSF) pay tribute to the man behind its transformation: Dr. Mohamad Nizam Mohamed Shapie, whose 30-year journey has redefined the landscape of Malay martial arts.

Here are seven key milestones that mark Dr. Nizam’s legacy:

1. Founding PASSMAL and Championing Authenticity

Dr. Nizam established PASSMAL to preserve and promote Silat Melayu as Malaysia’s official martial art, ensuring its teachings remain rooted in tradition.

2. Creating the Silat Malaysia Curriculum

He led the development of a structured curriculum for Silat Malaysia, integrating traditional techniques with sports science, now used in schools and universities.

3. Launching Silat Tempur for Children

In 2007, Dr. Nizam introduced Silat Tempur, a child-friendly combat sport model that has since empowered thousands of young athletes nationwide.

4. Establishing the World Silat Federation (WSF)

To globalise Silat Malaysia, Dr. Nizam founded WSF, which now connects Silat communities across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

5. Academicising Silat at UiTM and Globally

As an Associate Professor at UiTM, he has supervised over 50 Silat-related research projects and published extensively, bridging tradition with academia.

6. Representing Silat at UNESCO ICM

Dr. Nizam serves as an expert advisor to UNESCO ICM, advocating for Silat’s recognition as a global intangible cultural heritage.

7. Leading International Silat Showcases

From Poland to Korea, Dr. Nizam has led Silat performances and training, positioning Malaysia as a global centre for martial arts excellence.
