Silat, the traditional martial art of the Malay world, has long been a symbol of strength, discipline, and cultural identity. But today, Silat is stepping into a new era—one where it’s not only practiced in local gelanggangs (training arenas) but also showcased on international stages. Leading this exciting transformation is AIRBORNE UiTM, a research and innovation network under Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

AIRBORNE is on a mission to elevate Silat from a national treasure to a global movement. Through research, digital innovation, and international partnerships, it is positioning Silat as both a competitive sport and a cultural ambassador for Malaysia.

Silat EVO: A New Era of Competition

One of the most visible signs of this transformation is Silat EVO—a modern, professional competition format developed by AIRBORNE UiTM. Unlike traditional Silat tournaments, Silat EVO is held in a cage-style arena, similar to mixed martial arts (MMA), but with a uniquely Malay identity.

This format has captured the attention of international audiences. It blends the excitement of modern combat sports with the elegance and philosophy of Silat. Events like Silat EVO 2025, held at LaLaport Kuala Lumpur, have drawn participants and spectators from across the region, showcasing Silat’s potential as a global sport (Shapie et al., 2023).

Global Standards Through Strategic Partnerships

To ensure that Silat meets international standards, AIRBORNE collaborates with key organizations like the World Silat Federation (WSF) and UNESCO’s International Centre of Martial Arts (ICM). These partnerships help align Silat with global best practices in coaching, safety, and competition rules.

By working with these bodies, AIRBORNE is not only promoting Silat but also contributing to its recognition as a legitimate and respected martial art on the world stage (Shapie et al., 2024).

Digital Platforms for Global Access

One of the most powerful tools in AIRBORNE’s global strategy is technology. Platforms like Silat for Beginners allow anyone, anywhere in the world, to learn Silat online. Learners can access training videos, submit performance recordings, and receive digital certificates—all from the comfort of their homes.

This digital approach removes barriers of distance and cost. It also supports multilingual access, making Silat more inclusive for international learners. Whether you’re in Kuala Lumpur, London, or Los Angeles, Silat is now just a few clicks away (Parnabas et al., 2023).

Science Adds Credibility

What sets AIRBORNE apart is its commitment to sports science. Research in biochemistry, physiology, and performance analysis supports every aspect of Silat training. From understanding how muscles generate power to how hydration affects endurance, AIRBORNE’s scientific insights help athletes train smarter and safer (Shapie et al., 2022).

This scientific foundation gives Silat the credibility it needs to be taken seriously in international sports circles. It also ensures that Silat athletes are prepared to compete at the highest levels.

Silat in Tourism, Education, and the Creative Industry

AIRBORNE’s vision for Silat goes beyond the ring. It sees Silat as a key player in tourism, education, and the creative economy.

Imagine visiting Malaysia and attending a Silat performance at a cultural village. Or enrolling in a university course that teaches Silat as part of physical education or heritage studies. Or watching a Silat-themed film or digital series that introduces the art to global audiences.

These are not just dreams—they are part of AIRBORNE’s long-term strategy. By integrating Silat into different sectors, AIRBORNE is creating new opportunities for cultural exchange, economic growth, and national branding (Shapie et al., 2024).

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, AIRBORNE UiTM has ambitious plans. These include:

  • Launching mobile apps for Silat training and certification
  • Developing multilingual modules to reach more learners
  • Organizing international Silat competitions and festivals
  • Expanding research into sports technology and digital coaching

These initiatives are designed to make Silat more accessible, more engaging, and more globally recognized.

Conclusion: Silat Without Borders

Silat is no longer confined to the past or to local communities. With AIRBORNE UiTM leading the way, it is becoming a global force—a martial art that represents not just physical strength, but also cultural richness, scientific excellence, and international unity.

As Silat continues to grow, it carries with it the stories, values, and spirit of the Malay world. And thanks to AIRBORNE’s vision, the world is finally taking notice.
